SHENYANG, CHINA – Shenyang Baoruitong Automation Equipment Co., Ltd. (BRT) is proud to announce that its proprietary invention, the Building Materials Single Burning Item (SBI) Test Apparatus, has officially been granted a Utility Model Patent by the National Intellectual Property Administration (Patent No.: CN202321784220.9, Publication No.: CN220399357U, Patent literature >>>).
Invented by BRT senior engineers Minghui He and Chao Zhang, this innovative testing system addresses a critical limitation in conventional Single Burning Item (SBI) testing setups (such as standard EN 13823 rigs): traditional setups measure smoke generation during continuous forced ventilation, which often fails to replicate real-world enclosed building fires where smoke rapidly accumulates without immediate exhaust channels.
Solving Key Industry Testing Pain Points
In actual building fire scenarios, the greatest threat to life comes from toxic smoke buildup in sealed or poorly ventilated spaces. Standard testing apparatuses that continuously extract smoke during ignition can result in underreported maximum smoke concentrations, potentially underestimating the hazard of certain construction materials.
BRT’s patented testing system incorporates a sealed combustion chamber design integrated with a one-way intake valve system (Check Valve assembly) on the air inlet pipe:
Fresh Air Supply Without Smoke Leakage: The one-way valve permits necessary fresh air inflow to sustain burning while strictly preventing generated smoke from escaping or diluting prematurely.
True Total Smoke Accumulation Measurement: Laboratory engineers can accurately measure total smoke density, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxygen consumption in a simulated closed fire environment, revealing the true peak hazard of building materials.
Controlled Post-Test Exhaust & Scrubbing: Following data collection, an integrated downstream exhaust fan and gas scrubber safely clean and discharge toxic fumes, protecting laboratory staff and the environment.
Enhanced Sample Stability During High-Temperature Testing
In addition to air and smoke flow optimization, the patented apparatus features an upgraded specimen mounting trolley:
Anti-Deformation Specimen Clamping: Equipped with vertical plates, adjustable angle steel channels, and threaded pressure plate fasteners, the specimen cart securely locks building materials (such as timber, plastics, insulation panels, and composites) in place.
Prevents Sample Collapse: This rigid clamping mechanism prevents materials from warping or tilting under intense burner flames, guaranteeing test repeatability and strict compliance with international fire rating standards (e.g., EN 13501-1 Class B/C/D evaluations).
Continuous Commitment to Fire Safety Innovation
“Achieving this patent reflects BRT’s focus on bridging the gap between standard laboratory testing and real-world fire safety challenges,” stated BRT’s R&D department. “Our patented Single Burning Item test rig provides fire research institutes, construction material manufacturers, and third-party inspection agencies with unprecedented diagnostic accuracy.”
